Introduction

The Department of Environmental Engineering was the first of its kind to be established in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas in 1985.

After graduating its first students in 1989, a total of 1,500 graduated up to 2013. Master and doctoral degrees have been offered in the graduate school since 1989 and 1993, respectively.

Furthermore, in order to respond to the social trends in which demands for environmental engineer experts grew rapidly from 1994, the total number of spaces for students in the undergraduate course was increased from 40 to 120. Recently, the number of students in the undergraduate course was adjusted to 70 since 2010. Thus, this department has past its infancy in setting its foundation in education, and is now in its growth stage for development in both quality and quantity aspects. Moreover, with the increasing awareness of environmental pollution, the importance of environmental engineering as a high-tech academic scholarship has come further into the limelight.

History

There are currently 1,500 graduates in undergraduate schools, 200 masters and 40 PhDs who play pivotal roles in the national development from various different social levels.

    GENERAL CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT(I)
    This is a laboratory course for the General Chemistry (1). Experience of the laboratory increases the ability of the application of the chemistry.

    The General Chemistry(I) introduces the basic concepts of the properties, constitution, structure and the reaction of matters, which is essential in modern chemistry, physics, biology and engineering.

    INTRODUCTION TO FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING
    This course provides an introduction to accounting within the context of business and business decision. The audience will explore accounting information’s role in the decisions marking process, and learn how to use various types of accounting information found in financial statements and annual reports. Understanding how accounting information can be used to make better business decisions will benefit all students, regardless of their major course of study or chosen career.

    This course contains basic properties of sequences, limit of functions, continuous functions, rational and irrational functions, transcendental functions, elementary calculus, 3-dimensional vectors, and matrices.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    PRACTICAL ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students develop basic English verbal skills in real life situations. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with basic English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to practice speaking English utilizing basic English structures. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    STATISTICS(1)
    This course defines events and probabilities, conditional probabilities and independence to evaluate probabilities. Elementary probability distributions such as binomial distribution, geometric distribution, Poisson distribution, and normal distribution are also introduced. The concepts of sample distribution of the statistic and the central limit theorem are introduced. The statistical inference including estimation and hypothesis testing of the mean and the standard deviation will be discussed.

    CALCULATION OF ENERGY BALANCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
    This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to energy balance for environmental system. It will be discussed energy balances together with he accessory background information need to understand apply them correctly. This lecture will focus on heat balance with or without chemical reaction and phase change to concern for solving the environmental pollution. The objective of this course improves engineering knowledge for development of pollution control system based on thermal treatment.

    This Course will emphasize basic chemistry required for various environmental area such as water and air quality control, solid waste engineering, and also will include organic chemistry, analytic chemistry, and water chemistry.

    Main goal of this lecture is to understand the various effects caused by the pollutants on ecosystem. To accomplish this goal, this lecture covers main three subjects - the basic ecological concepts, the effects by various pollutants, and methods for sustainable ecosystem. Class will be held on two ways: on-line and off-line.

    PHYSICO-CHEMICAL WATER AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT
    Emphasis on the understanding of basic theories on the process mechanisms and control variables of unit operations, and various chemical processes to be utilized in treatment of water and wastewater will covered in this course.

    CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
    This course studies scientific understanding of climate change, 2050 carbon neutrality policy, greenhouse gas reduction measures, and climate change adaptation policy. It enables students to actively participate in international cooperation and our government's response efforts to overcome the climate crisis in the future.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING ANAYSIS LABORATORY
    It is organized and operated as a basic analysis and experiment in the fields of water quality, atmosphere, waste, and soil environment, which are detailed major fields of environmental engineering. In the first week, the guidelines and rules for safety in the laboratory are trained, and from the second week, the education contents are organized for three to four weeks in each field, and professors in each field are in charge of education. The water quality sector teaches pH measurement of water quality, dissolved oxygen concentration measurement, total solid (TS) and suspended solids (SS) concentration measurement, and the solid waste management sector teaches three components of waste and calorific value measurement, etc.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
    This course will provide the basic theories of the ionization reaction, the precipitation reaction, oxidation-reduction reaction and the titrimetric procedures for the analysis of the environmental samples.

    ENVIRONMENTAL FLUID MECHANICS
    Basic principles in the fluid mechanics that are crucial to understand the flow of pollutants in the environmental system are lectured. Selected topics such as dynamic balance, continuity and energy conservation principles in the fluid mechanics will be handled in the class to bolster the ability of problem solving in the environmental area.

    MANAGEMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENT
    Main objevtives of air quality management is to scientifically investigate a variety of problems related to atmospheric pollution, and to logically evaluate proper strategies to control the air pollution problems, with a particular emphasis on the atmospheric chemistry and air pollution engineering sciences. In addition, micrometeolorogy is the most important area to understand the atmospferic fate and behavior of air pollutants emitted from a variety of sources. This lecture deals with the principal concepts on the micrometeorology and atmospheric dispersion phenomena, in association with the gaussian dispersion modeling.

    WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT
    The critical topics associated with the use of water resource is maintenance of water quality. thus, the subjects to be considered in this course include one definitions and characterizations on water issues, analytical methods for water quality management and modelling for the predictions, control technologies to reduce water pollution and to conserve the water environment, and different modification of water quality.

    AIR POLLUTION METEOROLOGY
    The lecture on the air pollution meteorology includes fundamental concepts on the structure of atmosphere, veryical temperature profiles, interpretation of wind data, atmospheric stability, and other routine meteorological parameters. A particular emphasis will be given to the atmospheric dispersion modeling and fate and behaviour of air pollutants on the basis of atmospheric chemistry and physics.

    ENVIRONMENTAL REACTION ENGINEERING
    This course focuses on the principles of the design and operation for waste/air pollutant/wastewater treatment reactors concerning with environmental control system.

    STANDARD METHODS ON WATER QUALITY AND PRACTICE
    This course include laboratory works for the standard methods on water quality and practice. A half of this course will be covered by lectures on the principles of water quality measurements, and the other half by experimental works on important water pollutants analysis. Content of this lecture consists of the principle concepts, fundamentals, and the concrete methodology of basic analysis those are required in the field of water quality.

    Basic theories of water flow, continuity and momentum conservation equations, hydrostatics, analysis and design of pipe and open channel flow, drag force of submerged body, and measurement of flow rate.

    PARTICULATE CONTROL ENGINEERING
    Air pollution process and its control strategy are lectured. Physicochemical process of the air pollution is classified, and its control technology is studied. The main topics in the class are about the particulate control methods for the prevention of the air pollution. The student will get understanding on the designing of optimal control system for air pollution prevention in point of economic view through the class.

    RESOURCE CIRCULATION AND WASTE MANAGEMENT
    Solid waste management is concerned with the generation, onsite storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and recovery, and disposal of the solid wastes from a technological society. Today solid waste management is multidisciplinary activity that is based on engineering principles, but also involves economics, urban and regional planning, and the social sciences, among other fields. It is the objective of this course to bring together a wide body of knowledge concerning the rapidly changing and expanding field of solid waste management. The major focus is specially on residential and commercial solid wastes, although industrial and other types of wastes will be also discussed.

    COMBUSTION AND FLUE GAS CONTROL
    General control principles on the air pollutants in gas phase are lectured. The lecture is divided into two parts, one is on the understanding of air pollutants formation in the process and the other is on its control strategy. In the control strategy part of the class, the designing principles of control devices that are applied the unit operation technique and process control technique are stressed.

    The objectives of this course are to practice environmental technologies in the real field by sending students to the industries and research institutes outside the university for 2-4 weeks during the summer vacation period.

    SOIL ENVIRONMENT
    The quality of our environment is a function of both natural phenomena and human activities. Soils are often the interface between human activities and those parts of the environment that we wish to preserve and protect. Soils play an important role in environmental quality as they can be a source, sink, or interacting medium for many contaminants. Therefor proper soil management is an important step in maintaining and even improving environmental quality. This course first provide an overview of basic soil science, hydrology, atmospheric chemistry, and the classification of pollutants, and then addresses the immediate issue of investigating, designing, and implementing technology to remedy the most challenging contaminated land sites.

    ADVANCED WATER AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT
    Advanced treatment is, regardless of tap water or wastewater, defined as the additional treatment needed to remove by products, suspended and dissolved substances remaining after conventional secondary treatment. Based on the comprehensive understandings of water and wastewater treatment process, some state-of-art informations on the removal of nitrogen, phosphorous, biological recalcitrants, THMs, pesticides, etc. From both the effluents and treated water will be discussed in this courses

    This course set the goal at grasping the present state of environmental pollution and learning basic knowledge about direct calculating basic factor for designing total environment.     MODELING AND SIMULATION OF WATER TREATMENT PROCESSES
    This course aims to derive pollutants removal rate and design factor by modeling package along with theory class for modeling factors of each process of water and sewage treatment. Through this process, not only the understanding of the major design and operation factors of the existing water treatment process is expected but also the rationality and effectiveness can be improved by simulating these processes in the future design.

    SLUDGE MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT
    The generation of sludge, i.e. liquid or solid waste, from the process of water or wastewater treatment is inevitable phenomenon and it should be reduced in volume, treated completely and disposed safe. This course will handle characterization of sludges, treatment technology and strategy such as composting, chemical fixation and dumping.

    THE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND LAW
    This class focuses on the formation of the overall views on the environmental problems. You can understand the environmental problems with not only the engineering views but also the economic views, the social views. You can grow the real specialist, who can see the forest of environmental problems in big perspective. You will learn the goals of the environmental policy, as well as the tools and methods. We’ll discuss the actual examples of the successful policies and others in detail. Because the professor of this lecture has charged these problems for 30 years at the Ministry of Environment.

    BIG DATA-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL & SPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
    This is a lecture to introduce applicable technologies regarding to environmental and spatial information system. One of main tools in this class is 'R' which is free software environment for statistical computing and modeling. - We are to share the basic concept of R to understand the environmental condition and to make models for estimating environmental concerns in our country and/or in other countries. - And we are also trying to take several protocols to get to the ideal goal using environmental big data in our area of interest. - Finally, we are going to be ready to analyze the condition of a environment in R and make models in R to solve the environmental problem.

    ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
    The objectives of this course are to investigate control strategies for the minimization of environmental impact due to development activities, by system engineering approaches, and to investigate control factors using mathematical modeling techniques. The pollutants emitted to the environment (such as the atmosphere and rivers) will be eventually removed from the environment through a variety of processes including diffusion, advection, chemical transformation, deposition etc. These complex phenomena can be explained by mathematical models, and the fate and behaviour of the pollutants can be described by such models. Computer simulation based on such mathematical models can provide us soulutions to control the pollutants.

    Global circulation of water resources, precipitation, measurement of rainfall and its analysis, evaporation, transpiration, infiltration, ground water movement, run-off, frequency analysis, development of water resources, design of hydrologic facilities.

    INDUSTRIAL SAFETY
    In industrial society, workplace safety is a very important essential factor. In particular, as laws related to industrial accidents such as the Serious Disaster Punishment Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act have been strengthened, each company is reinforcing the number of safety management teams and further specializing their roles and functions. Accordingly, among national technical certificates, industrial safety engineer certificates are becoming more valuable. In preparation for obtaining a national technical certificate, this curriculum teaches safety management theory, ergonomics and system safety engineering, mechanical risk prevention technology, electrical risk prevention technology, chemical facility risk prevention technology, and construction safety technology.

    LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT AND PRACTICE
    The Life-Cycle Assessment is gradually becoming a more important method for industry to understand, manage, and reduce the environmental, health and resource consumption impacts associated with its processes, products, and activities. This subject educates a framework, based on generally agreed principles, and detailed recommendations on LCA methodological key issues. Also, this subject gives and discusses different options in numerous cases where commonly agreed method has been used.
